The first national symposium on magnesium batteries and key materials, initiated by Chongqing University, was held in Chongqing from October 28th to 30th, 2021. The conference was organized by the New Energy Materials Development Committee of Nonferrous Metals Society of China, Magnesium Branch of China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association, Magnesium Alloy Branch of Chinese Materials Research Society and Journal of Magnesium and Alloys, and hosted by China Nonferrous Metals Techno-Economic Research Institute and National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloy of Chongqing University. Prof. Fusheng Pan, professor of Chongqing University, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, chairman of Chongqing Science and Technology Association, vice chairman of Chinese Materials Research Society, Dr. Hongguo Zhang, vice chairman and secretary-general of China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association, and Mr. Junhu Zhou, General manager of Shaanxi Magnesium Industry (Group) Company Limited, delivered the welcome speech. Dr. Ruhai Lin, the president of China non-ferrous Metals Industry Association Magnesium, secretary of the party committee of China Nonferrous Metals Techno-Economic Research Institute, chairman of the New Energy Materials Development Committee of Nonferrous Metals Society of China, chaired the opening ceremony.
This conference attracts broadly attentions. This conference is considered as the "first summit of magnesium battery in China ". More than 200 national and international scientists, coming from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chongqing University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Tsinghua University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Germany, the United States and Australia, attended this conference. Mr. Weidong Qi, the president of Baoshan Iron & Steel Co., Ltd, and Mr. Jianzhang Su, the chairman of the board of Guangdong National Technology, Mr. Qian Sun, the vice president of Magnesium Branch of China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association, Prof. Jingfeng Wang, the deputy director of Magnesium Alloy Branch of Chinese Materials Research Society, Prof. Xiaodong Peng, the executive deputy editor-in-chief of Journal of Magnesium and Alloys, Prof. Xiaoxu Huang, the director of College of Materials Science and Engineering of Chongqing University, and Prof. Dingfei Zhang, the director of National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloy of Chongqing University, attended the conference.
In the welcome speech, Prof. Fusheng Pan pointed out that the transformation of energy structure plays the crucial role in the process of the implementation of the carbon peaking and neutrality target and this is the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the development of magnesium-based energy storage materials. With the advantages of abundant resources, high energy density and high safety, magnesium ion battery is the potential battery for the next generation energy storage device. The magnesium resource in China is very rich, accounting for more than 70% of the world's mineral resources. The application of magnesium batteries may bring a "disruptive revolution" in the battery industry, which accelerates the transformation of energy structure, the application of new energy, the insurance of the national security of strategic resources, and the improvement of public safety in daily life. Prof. Fusheng Pan also figured out three important points about the application of magnesium battery research and development. The first one is to strengthen the popularization of science. It is encouraged to let the public concern the development of magnesium battery industry and magnesium ion battery. The second one is to strengthen the cooperation. It is encouraged to make the academic collaboration and international cooperation between various societies, disciplines, and industries. The third one is to strengthen the cooperation between academy and enterprises. The industry-university-research interaction will speed the process of the industrialization of magnesium ion battery.
This conference covers the recent broad research and the application of magnesium ion battery, magnesium air battery and magnesium dry cell. The topics have been detailed discussed, including the construction of magnesium battery cathode, the modification design of cathode and interface modification, the development and pairing of new electrolytes, the regulation strategy of electrode interface, and the theoretical calculation of battery design. The worldwide eminent experts made wonderful reports in the conference, including Prof. Maximilian Fichtner from Helmholtz-Institute Ulm, Prof. Yan Yao from University of Houston, Prof. Tianpiao Liu from Utah State University, Prof. Guoxiu Wang from University of Technology Sydney, Prof. Guanglei Cui from Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocesses technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof. Guangsheng Huang from Chongqing University, Prof. Yanna Nuli and Prof. Jianxin Zou from Shanghai Jiaotong University, Prof. Liqiang Mai from Wuhan University of Technology, Prof. Yuegang Zhang from Tsinghua University, Prof. Pengjian Zuo from Harbin Institute of Technology, Prof. Zhong Jin from Nanjing University and Prof. Jiwei Ma from Tongji University.
Magnesium battery research team in National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloys, Chongqing University, is the largest magnesium battery research team worldwide, led by Prof. Fusheng Pan, and supported by a number of national experts. The main research directions include magnesium ion battery, magnesium air battery, magnesium dry cell and so on. The team has made a number of important achievements already. With the cooperation of enterprises, the magnesium air battery has been massively produced and sold to Europe, America and Japan. The seawater-activated magnesium battery has been utilized as the key product of military industry. The team has developed a number of systems of magnesium ion batteries and made the breakthroughs of the key materials. The industrialization application demonstration base of magnesium ion battery has been established in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The magnesium ion batteries will be trial-produced and demonstrated soon.
In this conference, Prof. Guangsheng Huang, from the magnesium battery research team of National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloys, Chongqing University, gave the presentation "Design and performance optimization of the cathode of magnesium ion battery ", Prof. Chaohe Xu gave the presentation "Research on the key materials for high performance magnesium metal-based battery", Prof. Yuping Liu gave the presentation "Construction and energy storage research of high voltage magnesium-lithium hybrid ion battery system", Associate Professor Liang Wu gave the presentation "Research on discharge behavior of Mg-Al-Zn and Mg-Li-Al-Zn air battery", Associate Professor Jiaxin Wen gave the presentation "Preparation and performance research of all inorganic salt electrolyte of rechargeable magnesium battery ", and graduate student Xueting Huang gave the presentation "Research on boron-based non-nucleophilic electrolyte of rechargeable Mg battery ".
